Reaction of sodium and sulfur, formation of sodium sulfide (Na2S):
2Na(s) + S(s) → Na2S(s)
A possible side-reaction is the combustion of sulfur in air (in air oxygen) with the formation of sulfur dioxide (SO2):
S(s) + O2(g) → SO2(g)
As sulfur dioxide is a toxic gas, the experiment was carried out under a fume hood! Since the first experiment is potentially dangerous, protective screen and fireproof gloves were being used!
